#1 Cost of Living

On the national index, Tyler is below the national average for the cost of living. Its economy is diverse, and Tyler is considered the manufacturing, health care, educational and retail center of East Texas. The area offers abundant and low cost labor, land and buildings.

Lakes and Parks
It is a sure bet that a city surrounded by 27 prime sporting lakes will offer great recreational sports and good fishing. Bass fishing? Drive less than an hour from Tyler to Lake Fork, which has produced 11 of the top 20 bass in Texas. For serene beauty, Lake Tyler and Lake Palestine are just minutes from Tyler. Tyler State Park is made up of 985 acres of woods surrounding a small lake. Twenty-five additional parks are located in Tyler, all with picnic areas. Four local parks have ideal hiking and bike trails.

Golf
Golf Digest Magazine has recognized Tyler as the number one golf city in Texas. There are over 17 courses, both public and private, within a one-hour drive of downtown. The Cascades featuring the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf and Garden Valley Golf Resort, ranked the 6th Best Public Course in Texas, are only two of the many reasons to GOLF Tyler. Holleytree Country Club and Eagle’s Bluff also offer incredible courses for golfers in Tyler and East Texas.

Other recreational facilities and activities include both private and public tennis courts, parks and playgrounds, ball parks, soccer fields, bowling alleys, health clubs, hike/bike trails, picnic areas, and public and private swimming pools.

Tyler puts a high priority on educational opportunities for people of all ages. Tyler Junior College, Texas College and the University of Texas serve our city. State-of-the-art five arts performance facilities enhance university and college sponsored attractions, including performance theatre, music and dance. Opened in August 1997 on the UT Tyler campus, the R. Don Cowen Fine and Performing Arts Center include the Vaughn Auditorium with seating for 2,000. The auditorium’s acoustically-tuned environment, combined with state-of-the-art lighting and technical capabilities, creates a stimulating setting for world-class performance.

Through Continuing Education, more than 200 non-credit classes for fun, cultural enrichment and work force preparation are offered each year. Among these are courses and trips offered through the TJC Seniors’ College, an enhanced learning program for individuals 55 or older. Courses in Seniors’ College meet on the TJC campus, 1400 East Fifth Street.

The University of Texas Health Center at Tyler

Over 70 primary care and specialty physicians, a broad spectrum of clinic services and a 150-bed acute care hospital are conveniently located under one roof. Additionally, the Health Center provides continuing medical education to the community. Finally, scientists at UT Health Center are conducting biomedical research into some of today’s most pressing health and medical problems.

East Texas Medical Center
East Texas Medical Center Tyler serves as the flagship facility for the ETMC Regional Health Care System. East Texas’ largest hospital, ETMC Tyler is a self-owned, not-for-profit, referral facility specializing in acute care medicine and offering a ‘continuum of care’ approach designed to provide regional care for all major medical services. ETMC Tyler takes a broad, community-minded approach to extending quality care to residents of East Texas through regional centers of excellence. These include the area’s first and only Level 1 trauma center, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center, advanced oncology care and a full range of behavioral health services for all age groups, including seniors.

Trinity Mother Frances Health System
Wherever you are in East Texas, you are never far from the quality medical care provided by trinity Mother Frances Health System. Mother Frances Hospital, a 368-bed facility in Tyler, was recently named one of the nation’s best performing hospitals for open-heart surgery. Trinity Mother Frances Health System is also recognized for outstanding patient care for cancer, diabetes, neuro and orthopedic disorders and urologic disease. DirectCARE centers offer quick, convenient care for minor emergencies or illnesses. They are open extended hours, seven days a week.
